Daniel Merrill is a composer, performer, and educator whose work intersects music, history, and cultural geography. Known for his site-specific compositions and psychogeographic practices, Daniel’s international projects are deeply rooted in exploring the histories, landscapes, and communities that shape our collective experiences. Through collaborations with Dead Rat Orchestra, Kaddal Merrill, and Nujumi, his music serves as both reflection and investigation, inviting audiences into narratives that challenge and expand our understanding of place and memory.
A multi-instrumentalist, producer, and technologist, Daniel draws inspiration from both heritage and innovation. Alongside numerous albums and collaborations, he has produced soundtracks for television and theatre. He has designed, planned, and developed site-specific performances, working with heritage, community, and arts organizations to create immersive experiences that weave together elements of history, place, and community. His touring experience spans the UK, Europe, and beyond, bringing these unique performances to a wide range of venues and audiences.
At the heart of Daniel’s creative process is a deep passion for his violins, which have been passed down through generations, and a dedication to technology. This blend of tradition and innovation lies at the core of his musical explorations. His approach is further enriched by a love of reading in fields such as ethnomusicology, anthropology, sociology, history, philosophy, literature, and poetry. For Daniel, the insights developed in these disciplines provide a vital underpinning to the creative act, allowing music to manifest new realities and explore complex ideas through sound.
In addition to his artistic practice, Daniel is dedicated to music education. He encourages students to engage with the world through sound, enriched listening, and creative technologies. He has led courses in Computer Music, Sound Design, Advanced Studio Production, and live events management. Daniel has also organized field labs and creative engagements across the globe—including the UK, Spain, Morocco, Brazil, and Trinidad—providing students with transformative, hands-on experiences in culturally rich environments. His innovative programs foster curiosity and engagement, helping students discover new perspectives through the power of musical creation.
